Laser Hair Removal

Love Your Skin

This process is called selective photothermolysis (photo means light and thermolysis mean destroying with heat).

It is selective because it targets only the hair and not the skin. Hair is natural to your body and it grows in stages. At any given time, not all hairs are in the growth or active stage. Lasers are most effective at targeting active hairs, meaning hairs in the active stage. Some follicles are destroyed, while others are miniaturized into fine hairs or shocked into prolonged dormancy.

Treatments

We use Candela laser equipment which is the gold standard in laser hair removal at all of our locations. Laser hair removal works by targeting a group of hair follicles, using enough energy to disable and/or destroy the root without harming the surrounding skin.

Multiple treatments are required for optimal results. The best interval for re-treatment depends on the hair cycle growth patterns in that area of the body. Age, ethnicity, weight, metabolism, medication, and hormones all play a huge role in the resilience, as does the thickness of the hair follicle. Best laser hair removal prices guaranteed!

Laser Hair Removal FAQ

Laser hair removal frequently asked questions – get some answers!

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser and light sources produce a bright beam of light that is preferentially absorbed by melanin (the pigment in hair) thus causing damage to the hair shaft and follicle without damaging the surrounding tissue.

How many laser treatments does it take?

Depending on the density of hair, colour of the hair and hormonal factors, the number of treatments required varies from 8-12, spaced 4-6 weeks apart for the face and 6-8 weeks apart for the torso, and 8-9 weeks apart for the legs.

With each treatment there is cumulative damage to the hair follicle and this results in a progressive reduction in the number and diameter of the hairs. There are also different stages of hair growth and hairs in the active growth phase are more responsive to the laser. Both of these facts explain why multiple treatment sessions are required
.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The FDA has cleared lasers for permanent reduction of unwanted hair and the results are excellent. Although no one can guarantee complete and permanent removal of unwanted hair, we can assure you that laser hair removal is the most advanced and effective procedure today and clients are extremely content with the results.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Clients describe the sensation to be similar to a small snap of an elastic band. Our laser uses a cool spray that pulses directly before and after the laser beam, making the treatment quite comfortable.

What type of laser does Smooth Effects use?

At Smooth Effects Laser Hair Removal, we use the Candela GentleLase Plus and GentleMax Pro which are medical grade lasers and the industries gold standard for permanent hair reduction. Prior to treatment we offer complimentary consultations with one of our trained and certified technicians. She will explain, how the laser works, what to expect before, during and after your treatment, as well as go over the average number of sessions for optimal results.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

The area being treated needs to be shaved the night before or the morning of your appointment. The closer the shave, the better. Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and tanning lotions a minimum of 2 weeks prior to your treatment.

What can I expect after my treatment?

Immediately after treatment the area may feel like you have a slight sun burn, increased redness and possible swelling. You need to avoiding excess heat such as hot tubs, saunas, excessive workouts and hot showers or baths for 24 to 48 hours. During the first 7 to 14 days after treatment you will notice the hairs coming to the surface and falling out. You can speed up this process by shaving and exfoliating. At this point you will experience a dormant period where there is no hair growth. Approximately 1 to 2 weeks before your next treatment you will notice the next cycle of hair growing in.

What should I do between my treatments?

During this time, you should be avoiding sun exposure. Do not wax, tweeze or epilate between treatments. Shave as needed between your laser appointments.

Are there any possible side effects?

You may experience slight reddening or local swelling at the treatment site, but this typically goes away within hours. Less common side effects include blistering or bruising but this tends resolve itself quickly. The skin may also become lighter or darker following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after treatments will minimize any risks.

Is laser treatment safe during pregnancy?

Doctors typically advise women to avoid cosmetic laser treatments during pregnancy because no studies have been done to prove that it is safe for you and your baby. Due to the lack of research, we do not treat anyone during pregnancy.
